If you live in the Cincinnati area, you might have come across a rag known as the City Beat. I was wondering if anyone else notices the same things I do whenever they read a copy? Is it me, or is the City Beat written by a bunch of psuedo-intellectual douche bags? None of which, can write their way out of a wet paper bag. They think they're so opinionated, but their opinion is informed by whatever or whomever is considered "hip" or "on the edge of thinking". (If that makes any sense at all?) They have this snarky left wing liberal "I'm smart because I've read Franz Kafka" attitude or some shit. It's annoying. They think that what they're writing is so subversive at times, and it's not. It's just derivative drivel at best. The City Beat is proof, sadly that the left does not have the "monopoly on brains". Stop quoting demagogues and trying to pass it off as YOUR OWN OPINION. I mean you write for a FREE PAPER for christ sakes! How can you act "high brow"? It's free FOR A REASON! Your not the L.A. Press or any of the "underground newspapers of the 60's. Not even close. And none of you are half the writer Charles Bukowski was on his worst day.

movies that take place in the mind of the protagonist

Let me take this time to say that I HATE films that take place in the mind of the main character. More specifically, movies that use this device as a twist (like it's some big surprise). Maybe my general dislike for this type of film has to do with the fact that as a screenwriter the movie has been taking place in my head from the very begining, so it just seems redundant to have it take place in the mind of my protagonist as well...but mostly what I don't like about these movies is the lack of creativity, what I mean is that, like I've already said, it used to be a very original idea... it's an idea that was so creative in it's inception that now the most non-creative people flock to it... as if it will some how make their film automatically clever or creative. It won't. And it does not. It's the definition of dirivitive. Don't get me wrong I do like some movies that take place the mind of the hero, but they're few and far between.

For all those out there that love these cereberal adventures, don't fret, my opinion is FAR from gospel.

12 scripts. 12 scripts, that's the number I figured, a few months back. 12 scripts and you can consider yourself a legitimate screenwriter. You need them for experience. To develop leather skin. So I got started. Of course along the way you stop thinking about being a big time screenwriter and all that. Stops being the point. Get past the silliness of it all. But then... after, you realize that's what you are. I tell you, you learn a lot of things on your way to 12 screenplays. None more important than this.... keep writing!

I came up with (i.e. stole) this 12 scripts idea from the awesome "500 fights" monologue, that Vin Diesel delivers in the movie KNOCK AROUND GUYS. What do you think??

I made the short list over @ John August's blog!!

This is f**king cool! For those of you who don't know who John August is, he's a Hollywood screenwriter. Some of the films he's wrote are: "BIG FISH", "CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY", "GO", "CHARLIES ANGELS", "CHARLIES ANGELS: FULL THROTTLE", "THE CORPSE BRIDE", and he wrote and directed the "NINES." John has this awesome blog where he shares his knowledge on screenwriting and the movie industry. Every now and then he does Screen Challenges, where he gives his readers a scene to write for a specific genre. The recent challenge was to write an action scene/sequence suitable for a summer blockbuster. To be more specific Superheroic action scene. And out of 145 entries I MADE THE SHORT LIST AS AN HONORABLE MENTION!! He even dropped my name! Now I know it's not like I sold a big spec or anything, but it's still cool to have a big time Hollywood screenwriter to mention little old me. The winner was Spenturion, who wrote a cool little scene about a super hero named Azure who teaches some orphans the ropes in the super hero business. I recommend anyone who's interested in screenwriting to stop by his site, and check it out. Pop Skull is a low budget horror movie directed by the talented Adam Wingard. I've been following this guy's work ever since I saw his winning Sidewalk Film Fest short "Don't Worry". If you haven't seen it, check it out it's on Youtube. While your at it, checkout his first feature Home Sick, it's on DVD. The movie stars Bill Moseley, Tom Toweles, and Tiffany Shepis. The dude made it when he was only 19! The DVD (Home Sick) also has a few awesome shorts of his.

I think someone has pilfered my Taken DVD!!?? This has got me a little pissed I must admit. For those who have not experienced the awesomeness that is TAKEN, TAKEN is the Liam Neeson ass-kick fest by french cinematographer turned director Pierre Morel. I recommend it to anyone who has yet to see the film. And to whomever took my TAKEN DVD: I don't know who you are. I don't know what you want. If you are looking for ransom, I can tell you I don't have money. But what I do have are a very particular set of skills acquired over a very long career in the shadows, skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you give my DVD back now, that will be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you. But if you don't, I will look for you. I will find you. And I will kill you.

I'm finally done with my first draft of my crime spec script. I feel such a sense of accomplishment. I'm probably going to give it to a few people to read, and get some feedback on it, then do a rewrite based on what I can assess from the feedback. While I wait on that I'm going to get to work on ANOTHER SCRIPT!!

Working a full time job and writing is a pain in the ass! I can't wait until the day I can just focus on my passion... until that day I will continue to do both, because I have to.

Which sucks big donkey dick! Speaking of donkey cock.... how big is the donkey's from Shrek? It must be massive even by donkey standards, because he banged that big dragon bitch! Let's be honest her huge dragon vagina has got to be humid, dark, and cavern like, like a midevil dungeon... and I wonder if she ever gives the donkey blow jobs? I mean the bitch breathes fire!! One would think that they've at least tried this once during the tenure of their relationship. I'm writing like hell, trying to get this script into shape! It's April 27th and the due date for the Nicholl is May 1st!!! Balls to the wall!! I'll let you know how it's going (if anyone is reading this out there? hello?). I've got a lot of writing ahead of me, but I feel good about the script so far and they have been flowing out of me (the words), so we'll see.....

RE-FOCUSED

Another year went by and I haven't accomplished shit. Except for allowing my self to be lazy and complacent. Oh, I managed to get our utilities cut off at our house! WOW Ryan you're a real winner! Seriously though, I have been really unable to focus on getting my foot in the door of the film industry, (but in my defense I haven't really done anything to get myself "noticed") that's going to change though. I am re-focused and I'm going to make it! I'm not giving myself a back up plan, because I don't want to back up. I'm 27 years old now and it's do or fucking die time. I'm working on a feature length script that I will be finishing in the next few days (it kicks ass btw). Once I'm finished with it I will submit it in the Nicholl screenwriting contest. If you never heard of the Nicholl, let me tell you that it's only the most prestigious screenwriting competition in the world. It's the Academy Of Motion Picture Arts And Sciences (aka the Oscars) competition. There will probably be over 3,000 submissions and of the 3,ooo they only pick 5!! I'm not stupid, I'm a good writer but I'm not going to put all my hopes into just the Nicholl. I will also submit to a few other screenplay contests out there as well. After I finish with that I'm going to send in my application to the Sudance Institue, and see how that goes. While I wait on the results from the contests, I will write another feature length script that I will try to get shot before the year's up. Oh, and I'm moving me and my family to Los Angeles (during a recession) also....
This is going to be on hell of a ride! You what they say though "you only live once" and goddamn it I'm gonna live!

Hi to anyone out there who's taking the time to read this. My name is Ryan Jackson I'm a filmmaker. I live in a little city right outside Cincinnati, called Hamilton. Obviously I'm not in the best area for trying to get into the industry (the film industry) I plan on moving to LA or New York by the end of this year. Until then I have a lot of work to do!!! This is going to be a big year for me (2008) I'm 26 years old, and I really need to go for broke!! So I plan on doing whatever I can to make a SPLASH and get myself noticed. So follow along with me as I try to overcome my biggest obstacle... myself. I procrastinate, and have a tendency to be lazy at times! That is really the only thing that I foresee stopping me. So with that said it's time to get off my ass, and get to work!
